Notre Dame took the field against Cactus Shadows at home on September 27th for its homecoming night.
Junior linebacker James Jaquint had an interception in the first quarter that led to NDP first touchdown. Senior running back Dominic Mastro scoring on a three-yard rush and senior kicker Griffin Chewning making the extra point and giving the Saints an early 7-0 lead. Later that quarter, junior wide receiver Damien Owens had a 29-yard catch to put the Saints past the 50-yard line, but the Saints did not end up scoring.
Senior wide receiver Jaylen Mosley led Cactus Shadows to its first touchdown toward the end of the first quarter. Sophomore kicker Brayden Hasher missed the extra point attempt for Cactus Shadows after the touchdown.
Mastro had several strong runs in a row to start the second quarter, including a 12-yard carry, which led to the Saints making it to the Falcons’ half-yard line. Mastro had his second touchdown on the next play, giving the Saints a 14-6 lead.
Later on, Chewning had a great 55-yard punt all the way to the Falcons’ one-yard line. Cactus Shadows junior quarterback Jaden White made a scramble play and completion to get a first down, but the play got called back for a penalty because White was past the line of scrimmage when he threw it. The Saints defensive line stuffed Cactus Shadows on its 39-yard line on fourth down.
Later in the second quarter, Saints sophomore wide receiver Gavin Smith made a leaping catch on a pass from senior quarterback Derek Elsholz for a 10-yard gain. Elsholz then had a huge run to get the Saints to the Falcons 7-yard line. Senior wide receiver Connor Butt caught the third touchdown of the night, and Chewning made the extra point to put the Saints up 21-6 at half. Senior defensive lineman Spencer Roy had several big tackles during the first half and smothered the Cactus Shadows run game.
At halftime the winners for the homecoming king and queen were announced. Senior Douglas Kelham won king and senior Nora Cipriano won queen. The rest of the royalty group was seniors Rachel Bateman, Lexi Bergamo Danny Doherty, and Alex Fitzgerald.
