Boys tennis is a few weeks into the 2020 season and looking forward to another chance to get back to the championship even though this season’s roster is very different than last year’s.

When asked what they are doing to prepare for the incoming season, sophomore Erich Huttinger said, “I just go out once or twice a week and slap some fuzzies.”

They have been dreading the loss in the 2019 championship to Tucson Catalina Foothills and are striving for a championship title in 2020. The team’s top players this season are senior Sam Shapiro, Huttinger (currently battling an injury), freshman Zach Zhang, sophomores William and Myles Miller, senior Coleman Reavey, and junior Collin Maddock.

Last year, the team only lost one match and it was in the finals. They are very confident this season and hopefully can bring the championship back to NDP after a 12-year drought. This season could be a good year for them, with time to build and develop a better team.

When asked about what made last year’s team so successful, Shapiro said, “We had good chemistry, and during practice we played each other which helped us learn our strengths and weaknesses.” This year, the team is going to focus on finding weaknesses in their opponents and then improving the areas that need work to make them better overall players.

The team is also working on the mental part of the game, such as being prepared and having a game-ready mindset. When asked about his mindset before a game, Maddock said he “clears his head and just focuses on his opponent and how to beat him.” The overall readiness of the team and mindset entering the season is insurmountable, and they are extremely confident and hopeful for this season.

This team is truly something to watch and have started out. They are extremely confident this year and believe they are going to win as they have been practicing for this season for months now and perfecting their hits, serves, backhands, and forehands. The boys are currently 1-1 with a victory over Buckeye and upcoming matches against Higley, Cactus Shadows, and Arcadia.
