The Saints began their matches against Central High School Bobcats with freshman Alban Francoise (106 LB) pinning Alexis DiCarlo fairly early in the first period. Then freshman Luc Bastian (113 LB) won by forfeit, followed by James Rogers (120 LB) pinning Andrew Rivera in the first period. Senior Ethan Chantler (126 LB) also won his match by forfeit. Other highlights were senior Brock Locnikar (220 LB) pinning Victor Flores swiftly in the first period of his match, and senior Jordan Jenkins (285 LB) pinning Central team captain Lelya Powell in the third period. Notre Dame won 48-21 in team play against Central.
The Verrado Vipers were the next team to challenge the Saints. Matches that stood out against the tough Vipers were Ethan Chantler’s quick pin against Brandon and Vinny Ruggerio’s pin against Alexander in the first round (136 LB). Sophomore Tyler Muranaka and Locnikar had the other highlight matches of the event. Muranaka (160 LB) pinned Trey towards the end of the first period, while Locnikar made quick work of Cisco by pinning him in the first round. The Saints ended up losing 30-42 in team play against Verrado, but they would have most likely won both matches of team play if it was not for the absence of the 170, 182, and 195-pound wrestlers.
After the match, Locnikar said, “I pinned the first guy after messing around with him for a little bit and then pinned the second guy extremely quick. It was a good time in front of the home crowd.”
Locnikar was also asked about his pre-match routine, in which he said, “I consider myself a gymnast kind of guy and like to do back handsprings on the empty mat to get my heartbeat going before the match.”
